Today, 1st June is a day to celebrate all things milk! World Milk Day recognises the importance of what many people would consider to be part of their staple diet.
We've all heard about the great difficulties facing British Farming over the last few years, particularly in relation to Dairy Farmers. With the price of milk being cut dramatically, many Dairy Farmers have had to either stop trading or find another way to diversify.
I recently visited a local dairy farm in Oxfordshire and was delighted to see the very high standards of practice on the farm. I was surprised by the stringent requirements and the low prices imposed by the supermarkets and feel that there is a real injustice in the industry.
World Milk Day was set up FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 2001 and today sees the latest development, with the introduction of the Milk Manifesto. I hope that raising awareness about milk and other dairy products will help to provide support to the struggling UK Dairy Farmers.
Established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, World Milk Day recognises the importance of milk as a global food.
