Around 180 farms in the Netherlands are believed to have bought their poultry from suppliers using illegal insecticide. The insecticide in question is contained in a treatment used on hens for red mites.

It is believed that around 700,000 contaminated eggs have been distributed to Britain. This amount comes as a shock to consumers after the Food Standards Agency previously estimated the figures to be in the region of 21,000!

Products containing eggs sold at Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda are being recalled. Egg products are also being recalled from Germany, Belgium and the Nethelands.
